End of Life Doulas

An End-of-Life (EOL) Doula is a non-medical professional who is specially trained to holistically (physically, emotionally, and spiritually) care for the elderly. Our Doula program is modeled after the birth doula model that has been enormously successful since its creation approximately fifty years ago. Helping someone to enter this world is very similar to helping someone leave this world. End of life doulas are now applying the same all-inclusive model to the bedside of those in need of end-of-life-care. EOL Doulas can work in a home, facility, hospital, as well as an in-patient hospice.  Collaboration with your health care professionals will help ensure the EOL Doula’s ultimate goal;  that death is a dignified and peaceful experience.

Adult Daughter Reading To Senior Male Parent In Bed At HomeOur certified EOL Doulas from Promise Hospice have been trained by Suzanne O’Brian, Founder of Doulagivers, an internationally recognized leader in the end of life trainings and care. Our EOL Doulas are trained in all ways to support someone from the time of a terminal diagnosis to after death care for the client’s loved ones.  Based on their extensive training, the Doulas offer suggestions for comfort, resources, and planning to the client and family. They also assist with creating sacred rituals, as well as, support of grief, bereavement, and recovery. These professionals are here to guide and support the family and client through their entire end of life journey.

Beth Aungier founder: “As a hospice owner I have been exposed to all realms of end of life care, or at least I thought I had been. EOL Doulas open up a whole new branch of care and remind us of what hospice used to be.  For the past 24 years I’ve been honored with the privilege to assist clients in creating their end of life plans as well as be a continuous support until their last day.   Now, instead of being limited in what we can and cannot have access to, this program actually lets us plan our end of life journey as we want it.   With EOL Doulas we have the opportunity to enhance hospice and move BEYOND HOSPICE.”

First Session
End of life planning can be difficult, but it is one of the greatest gifts that you can do for yourself and your family. Preplanning your end of life care ensures that your wishes are honored and puts you in the control of what care you want or do not want to receive.  Your EOL Doula will conduct a two hour, one-on-one, personal consultation to discuss options for end of life.  Many people are not fully aware that they have choices regarding care.  This consultation helps the client begin to plan their wishes.

  • Financial Planning
  • Medical Interventions
  • Diagnosis Discussion
  • Care Options (Medical and Non-medical)
  • Power of Attorney
  • Legal Planning
  • Living Arrangements
  • Funeral Planning
  • Asset Arrangements
  • Family Support
  • Home Health, Palliative, Hospice Care Options
  • Spiritual Support
  • After Death Planning
  • Pet Care
  • And Much, Much More

Your EOL Doula will supply a variety of forms and explain all the options available to you. In addition, your Doula will help explore any major concerns the client or their family may foresee.

What’s Next?
Depending on the package you pick will depict how often you want/need your Doula. Once your plan is produced, it is the EOL Doula’s job to support its implication. Some of the hardest discussions are reviewing your wishes to your loved ones. Your preplanned decisions can help relieve the burden from family members having to make any hard choices. Your EOL Doula can facilitate family meetings to discuss and help explain the choices that you have made and why these choices are important to you. It is extremely important to allow all family members to ask questions and understand your wishes fully.

The Plan
To put quality into the final stages of your life and to successfully plan for the most peaceful and dignified death.

“It is with the right compassion, support and guidance that we can have a wonderful elder phase of life.”
